A new week is ahead. Before we start thinking about the charts waiting to be coded, the questions that need answers, the deadlines on the calendar, and everything else competing for our attention, take a moment to think about what you want to carry with you into this week.
Maybe it’s something you learned last week; a coding concept that finally clicked, the confidence to stop second-guessing yourself and trust the knowledge you’ve worked hard to build, or maybe it’s simply the reminder that you don’t have to know everything—you just need to know where to find the answer.
This week, I’m taking with me:
Curiosity — because asking why is how we become better coders.
Confidence — because experience matters, and so does trusting what the documentation and authoritative guidance tell us.
Patience — because some anesthesia records require a little more investigation before the full story becomes clear.
Consistency — because strong coding habits are built one chart, one question, and one learning opportunity at a time.
A willingness to keep learning — because anesthesia coding never stops giving us something new to discover, and perhaps most importantly; the reminder that we are not simply assigning codes, we are reading clinical stories, interpreting documentation, applying guidelines, protecting compliance, and helping ensure that the services provided are accurately represented.
🔎 This Week’s Chart Talk Challenge
This week, I challenge you to slow down on one anesthesia record. Choose one case and look beyond the procedure name. Read the anesthesia record from beginning to end, and then take a look at the operative report. Ask yourself what did I learn from the documentation that I would have missed if I had coded from the procedure description alone? Maybe you discover a more specific ASA code, you identify an ancillary service, the anatomy changes how you interpret the procedure, you catch a documentation issue that needs clarification, or maybe everything confirms exactly what you originally thought. Either way, you did something important; you read the record instead of simply looking for a code. At the end of the week, come back and tell us what you discovered.
