Hi! My name is Dianne C. Moseley, CPC, CPCO, CPMA, CANPC, creator of Chart Talk ~ Anesthesia Coding Conversations. I am a healthcare professional with more than 32 years of experience in revenue cycle management and 15 years focused specifically on anesthesia coding, auditing, compliance, and education. Throughout my career, I have worked across multiple areas of the revenue cycle, giving me a broad understanding of how documentation, coding, compliance, and reimbursement work together. My passion has always been education—taking complicated coding concepts and making them easier to understand and apply in the real world. That passion is what led to the creation of Chart Talk. What began as a place to have conversations about anesthesia coding is growing into a comprehensive educational resource for anesthesia coders, auditors, educators, and compliance professionals. Sometimes the key to selecting the right anesthesia code starts with understanding the anatomy—and the words used to describe it.

I’m excited to share a new resource collection at Chart Talk ~ Anesthesia Coding Conversations: Anatomy & Terminology Tip Sheets.

These quick-reference educational resources were created to help anesthesia coders strengthen their understanding of the anatomical structures, directional terms, surgical approaches, and medical terminology that can influence code selection.

The new collection includes 10 downloadable tip sheets covering topics such as proximal vs. distal, medial vs. lateral, anterior vs. posterior, nerve vs. plexus vs. branch, spine terminology, vascular anatomy, surgical approaches, and translating operative language into coding language.

Why Anatomy & Terminology?

Anesthesia coding often requires us to look beyond the procedure name.

Where was the procedure performed?
What anatomical structure was involved?
What approach was used?
Is the documentation describing a nerve, a plexus, or a branch?
Does the terminology tell us something that changes our code selection?

Understanding the language of the operative report can help us move from simply recognizing words to understanding what actually happened anatomically.
